Background

Bringing an old era, into a new digital era

The Black Country Living Museum, located in Dudley, England, is a unique open-air museum that immerses visitors in the industrial history of the Black Country, a region famed for its contributions to Britain’s industrial revolution. Spread across 26 acres, the museum meticulously recreates a historic village with period-accurate buildings, shops, homes, and workshops, all staffed by knowledgeable costumed interpreters. Visitors can explore authentic canals, ride historic trams and buses, and even sample traditional fish and chips cooked the old-fashioned way.

As a big fan of the Black Country Museum I was slightly underwhelmed with their online presence, so I produced a proposal to redesign their website and also include a companion app that allowed visitors to interact with exhibits and gamify their visits.

Increasing engagement across the site

The Museum Explorer Application serves as a companion for visits across the Museum site and brings an element of gamification to it by interacting with objects you find and collecting stamps from attractions you visit.  These game-like elements aim to engage users, motivate action, and make these tasks or activities more enjoyable.
